See some glaciers

Alaska

Cruise in the Inside Passage and Land Tour from Anchorage to Denali to Fairbanks.

Ken and I went on an Alaskan cruise in August of 2003. We went through the inside passage and then took a train to Denali. We saw many glaciers and beautiful sights. Here are some of the sights we saw.

Day 2
Here is the beginning of the inside passage. The water was serene and the views magnificent. Here is one of the small towns along the way.

Day 3 - Ketchikan
We saw the New Eddy Stone. There were a lot of salmon fisherman in the passage. We saw them purse seining, a method of fishing.

Day 4 - Sitka
We stopped at Sitka where there was a great fight between the Russians and Indians.. We walked through a park filled with totem poles and saw the Archangel Dancers who were comprised all of women.

While walking through the park we saw this majestic bald eagle in a nearby tree.

Day 5 - Juneau
The Capital of Alaska. We visited Mendenhall Glacier and were able to get quite close by hiking in near the lake. The hike through the forest was lush and beautiful.

Day 6 - Haines
What a beautiful day we had! 80 degrees and perfect for sightseeing. Haines is a charming town untouched by commercialization. We rented bikes and rode by the river to Chilkoot Lake. We saw quite a few bald eagles.

Day 6 - Hubbard Glacier
We had rough seas and bad weather. We cruised by Hubbard Glacier and saw and heard the calving which sounds a lot like thunder. This was the end of the cruise part. We took a bus to Portage Glacier which is receding rapidly. A ferry gave us a good close up view of the glacier. Unfortunately it was raining hard, so the pictures were less than perfect. We stayed the night at Anchorage.

Day 8 - Denali
We took a train to Denali. It was pouring rain so we weren't able to see the mountain. We did have nice views of the river from the train however.

Day 9
In Denali we saw moose, caribou and Dall sheep. We went to a sled dog exhibit. Here I am pretending to be the musher!
